  • Abstract:Microplastics can significantly affect the migration and transformation of inorganic or organic pollutants in the water environment. In this study, adsorption properties and interaction mechanisms for Pb(Ⅱ) and TC adsorption onto polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyamide (PA) microplastics were investigated. In binary systems, TC and Pb(Ⅱ) mutually promoted adsorption behavior onto the surface of PVC and PA, which presented a synergistic effect. Adsorption isotherms of TC onto PVC and PA were highly linear. However, the adsorption process of Pb(II) onto PA was better simulated with Langmuir model. Solution pH played a significant role in the adsorption of TC and Pb(Ⅱ) onto PVC and PA. The effect of NaCl content on the adsorption of TC onto the two microplastics was negligible. However, the increase of NaCl content resulted in the decrease of Pb(Ⅱ) adsorption onto PA. Results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis showed that PVC bonded with TC mainly through hydrophobic interaction, while PA interacted with TC mainly through hydrogen bond and hydrophobic interaction; electrostatic interaction was the major interaction mechanism between PA and Pb(Ⅱ). Results of this study deepen the understanding of the interaction mechanisms between microplastics and pollutants, and provide a scientific basis for the risk assessment of microplastics in the environment.
