- Discussion on hydrophobic flocculation and hydrophobic force

- Abstract：Israelachvili and Pashley reported the discovery of hydrophobic force by experimental measurement in Nature in 1982. This finding excited the researchers and has invoked a continuous research since then. Over 30 years, the existence of hydrophobic force have been proved and accepted. According to this finding, the traditional DLVO theory should be supplemented with the hydrophobic force, thus modified as the extended DLVO theory, therefore, the traditional flocculation theory should include the contribution from the hydrophobic flocculation. Up to now, the great success of the hydrophobic flocculation has been achieved in the area of mineral separation, but it has not been recognized and studied in the area of water treatment. This article reviews the discovery of hydrophobic force, discusses the thermodynamic explanation and the microscopic mechanism for hydrophobic force, and introduces some water treatment technologies concerning hydrophobic flocculation, indicating that the researchers in the area of water treatment should study hydrophobic flocculation and promote the further development of water treatment by the theory of hydrophobic flocculation.
